Philosophy

My class serves as a laboratory for developing new skills, evaluating the effectiveness of current practices, and prioritizing the learning process over the final product. Excelling as a dancer requires repetition, commitment, and discipline—qualities I encourage to help students reach and exceed their goals. I foster an inclusive environment by ensuring that each student feels seen and heard, celebrating their individuality, and acknowledging the unique strengths they contribute to the classroom community. I guide students in researching and understanding their own bodies so they can continually deepen their self-awareness. I also introduce them to the rich and enduring tradition of historical techniques, which provide a strong technical foundation and support versatility across dance styles.

As a former member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, I take every opportunity to impart the foundational principles of the Cunningham technique: clarity, risk-taking, individuality, non-narrative movement, and the use of chance to break habitual patterns. I also integrate aspects of my broader lineage, from the explosive dynamics and sequential movement of my time with the Stephen Petronio Company to the somatic awareness cultivated through my Pilates training. My goal is to help students develop the confidence to dance as themselves while creating space for self-reflection, enabling them to make informed artistic choices. To support this, I offer multiple pathways for processing information: posing questions that invite clarity, engaging in discussion, and sharing essays or quotes from my own research and experience.
